Here’s Why Vampire Costumes Are So Popular Every Halloween

Vampires have been present in folklore for thousands of years, fear of their presence has sent towns and villages into terror and consequently night and the dark were feared and avoided. They were believed to be evil creatures, killers who consume souls along with blood.

The other part of the folklore about them, though, is on a completely different level. They have been portrayed as looking beautiful on the outside, and also as seductive, immortal beings whose intentions are terribly dishonorable. So in fact they attract us even though they terrify us.

Unlike us humans, vampires don’t have to obey the rules – any rules. There’s only one curfew they worry about, and that is sunrise. Even that sunrise issue is a huge part of the modern vampire’s appeal.

They weren’t just evil blood-sucking creatures of the night, in a way they were also its victims. They were exiles. It seemed like they were being punished by being excluded from society and the light and warmth of the sun. There is a religious aspect to this idea – they were being deprived of the light created by God and of the sight of God’s wonderful creation. So by being banished into the darkness, they were being punished.

Another interesting aspect of a vampire’s freedom from rules and social restrictions, is the nature of their sexuality. They have been portrayed as having very high libidos, and not always limiting themselves to the opposite sex. They were believed to be so lacking in proper gentlemanly and lady-like restraint, that vampires will have sex with just about anyone. The magnitude of their lusts is limitless and terrible.

Maybe another allure of the vampire is that he or she doesn’t fear their lusts or fight against them. They happily just give in to them and they never worry about the consequences of their actions because there never are any. They don’t ever feel any guilt. That could be a huge attraction right there, as no sane human being could ever be so free.

So in fact, vampires are not only the ultimate predator, they are also the ultimate outlaw. Not only are they terrifying, they are also fascinating. Then on top of that they are portrayed as being stunningly attractive and seductive and extremely dark and dangerous. The allure then is that they are perceived as being a sensational, mysterious creature that delivers a delicious fright. That’s why dressing up as a vampire is so perfect for Halloween, it’s sexy, sultry, with a very dark, strong undercurrent of being temptingly dangerous.
