Themed Chess Sets – The Samurai Warrior

Japanese History tells the tale of the Samurai Warriors, also known by some as the Bushi. These members of the military were committed to living lives set out in the code of the Bushido, ‘the way of the warrior. These guidelines meant a strict loyalty to ones master, extremely self-disciplined, showing a great deal of respect and always exhibiting ethical conduct.

Samurai warriors were skilled at using a range of weapons including bows, arrows, spears, and guns but most historical images of these warriors will show them with their most notorious weapon, the Samurai Sword. These swords would be worn by the warriors, thrust through their belts on their left hand side. This was for ease of drawing as most would be right handed. Indoors the Samurai may not have his sword but was never without a weapon. Upon closer examination one would find even a small simple dagger.

The Samurai’s traditional outfit would be a kimono, belted naturally to accommodate their swords. They always had another layer below, in the form of a style of loincloth. One style we see in images of traditional Samurai fighters and consisted of a wrap that formed what looked a lot like a giant diaper. The other was traditionally for under armor which looped from the neck around to the abdomen.

The themed chess pieces in the Samurai Warrior set shows the fighters suited up in armor and short kimonos with a geisha for the queen.
